I have a LAN in my house which i have recently connected via VPN with another(home)network. What i want to do is to measure the network performance over the VPN link. Then i want to test again the performance with the other network without using VPN. Basicaly what i want is to compare the performance measurements when VPN connection is establised and when is not, and to produce some graphs. My question is im not sure how i will test it without using VPN. Maybe through FTP?,telnet? I know some tools that i can use such as iperf or ntop. I have noticed as well when VPN is connected(im using ADSL 2Mb) the internet speed is slowing down and i want to show this somehow(with graphs maybe..)
Any suggestions how i could do that or any other tools that could help me it would be very very helpfull and apriciated.

How are you creating the VPN connection, what tools do you use for that, I wonder if the difference in the speeds is due to encrypting the session info to and from the VPN?
