Hi Larry,

I tried just now but I could not connect. I did the steps as mentioned in your guidelines but somehow it's now working here.

It may be that this is a specific issue.

Thanks for your help.

You're welcome, Arindom.

If you typed in the config files exactly, you either have a firewall blocking port 1723 or port 47 on the server machine, the client machine, or both machines.

Would you mind giving me the error message you get from the syslog (from both machines) when trying the connection?

I'm so confident in the ease and consistency of succes that I'll create a script that will actually configure the client and server if you will test it.

By the way, reviewing the configure files it appear that the first client config file (/etc/ppp/peers/myvpn) had performed a line wrap on the first line and made it appear as if there was a "VPN user" parameter as the first option. I fixed this and ensured marked the tables as no wrap.

If you post your error message(s) I'm sure I'll be able to discern the problem.

Hi, Arindom. Just a quick note. I added a downloadable script to the page (http://faq.apollo3.com/ljames/ubuntu/vpn/) that will do everything for the user. I don't believe you could possibly go wrong using the script.

It should only take seconds to setup the server and the client.

Thanks Larry for the script. This should be easy.

I will let you know once I test this again.

Thanks again for your continued research on this matter.

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 11, and I have same issue.
I changed configure in VPN connection and I can connect web while connecting to VPN server.

Step to do it:

1. In VPN client configuration screen, In IPV4 Settings tab, click to Routers... button
2. In Router screen,
Check to: Ignore automatically obtained routers
Check to: Use this connection only for resources on it network

3. connect VPN to testing.

I never could get consistency with the gui VPN client configuration application. I don't have any problems with performing using the command line to setup and run VPN.

Take a look at the link I provided above and you shouldn't have any problems.

T3RM1NVT0R:
Why you complicate thing, which isn't complicated? He have connection to VPN, so why you try to fix this connection?

arindom:
check your routes
Code:

route
if this seam to take ages (happens sometimes), then use
Code:

route -n
Post whatever it would spit out, when VPN is ON. Maybe your default route is going by VPN instead by your local interface?

This is built into Windows XP. Just use Windows XP VPN setup configuration:
Control Panel -> Network Connections -> New Connection Wizard -> (Tic) Connect to the network at my workplace -> Next -> (Tic) Virtual Private Network connection -> Next -> [Type in Computer Name -> Next -> (Tic) Do not dial -> Next -> [Type in ipaddress or host name of server] -> Next -> Finish -> (Configure the properties of the connection... click) Properties -> (Click the Networking tab] > (Select) TCP/IP -> Properties -> Advance -> (Uncheck) Use default gateway on the remote network -> OK -> OK -> OK
For windows, the key is to remove the check mark from the TCP/IP Network Properties to cancel using the remote computer's gateway. This way you continue to use your local computer's gateway. If you don't use your local computer's gateway you loose connection to the Internet.

I'm not familiar with the SHREW VPN tool. Also, if you're using the method I describe, it won't come into the picture. The method I described is built into Windows. If you have another VPN application running, this might conflict with the Windows VPN program and might be the source of your problem.

If you use the step I described you'd have access to the provided VPN server, then do the same thing for the next server.

There is a test you can check. Before connecting to your VPN use a resource such as http://www.apollo3.com/tools and check your IP address before connecting VPN. After you connect VPN check your IP address again. It should be the same both times... is it?
