VNC howto remove background?

Hi,
I've got VNC (the official one) on my linux machine but when I connect to it, it's very slow, I can notice a slow down over the LAN so it's no use over a tight internet connection.

How can I set the VNC server to disable sending the remote background. Is there a parameter? I've been all over the VNC website and viewd and man pages but there doesn't seem to be any way of doing this.

I've actually got it to connect to my monitor's display, which is nice, but I just don't want the background.

Any Ideas?

VNC doesn't know what a backgroud is. It sends bitmaps. What about removing the backgroud from the VNC server machine?
Or maybe you should consider an alternative to VNC? What about a simple X server?

I must have my wires crossed, because in Windows VNC server you have a tick box not to send the background, I kinda wanted the same for the linux version.

I've just tested the windows version and it actually removes the wallpaper locally not via vnc, then returns it when the connection ends so it looks like you are right about vnc not being clued up to remove it just over the connection.

People aren't gonna wanna have no wallpaper permanently and certainly aren't going to take it off every time a vnc connection is needed to their desktops to help then etc...

Is there any way of getting the linux VNC server to remove the wallpaper temporarily like the Windows version does?

Isn't the KDE program krfb vnc based. It has the option to remove the background image.
