Right ok, I have VMWare, I have RH 9 as the guest os, I also have Netgear network card FA311. Aparently the driver for it/module is Natsemi.
I have just installed the VMWare tools and basically do nto know what to do from there. When I do modprobe natsemi it says something along the lines of:
init_modules no such device, when I look in the folder for the moudles it does have natsemi.o
I am very much new to linux and just working my way round it. But I realy want to get this to work. Anyone able to help me out, tell me what to do of such, if able to, mind explaining what the line of code does as well pleasE?
Regards
Steve
P.S Also how do I get from X-Windows to just the command line :P
I'm going the other way with VMWare, host is RH9, guest is Windows. What network card is physically present in your host system doesn't matter, the VMware BIOS presents a virtual network device, and that's what you need to activate. Try an lspci as root in your VM. But the installation should have found the ethernet "card"???
If you started X at boot by entering run level 5, reboot and enter run level 3. There are many ways to to that, if you want that as default (but why?), change the 5 in line in /etc/inittab from
id:5:initdefault:
to 3.
If you started with startx, ctrl-alt-backspace (not delete) will shut down X. Sinc eyou are much better off with a terminal (or multiple ones) in X, I wonder why you want to go back to the console?
I am not able to edit the config for vmware while in XFree86 thats why I need ot get out, I am now reinstalling RH 9 in VMware for the hell of it, as I was messing aroundand it seems a little weird now :P
So what, I have to sort out the NIC in the BIOS of VMWare, (F2?)
