VMWare guest connects to every machine but host

I have installed a couple of vmware appliances on my Ubuntu Feisty box, using bridged networking. In each case, the guest os can network with other computers in my lan, but not with the host. The host can telnet in to open ports, but any activity always times out; and the same happens when the guest tries to contact the host os (via http, ssh, or whatever). I'm new with vmware; am I overlooking something obvious? Is there somewhere I can look for clues?

Depends on which quest I'm assuming, but when I had Windows XP as a quest inside of Debian, I had to map the host drives, I was using NAT for accessing internet through the host.

I don't have it installed any more, but if I remember correctly, I had to go through "vmware tools" in the Vmware window to tell vmware which drives to allow the quest to see, then in Windows I went through "My Network Places" to access it.

Thanks for the response. Hmm, I hadn't looked at drive access, although I imagine that was broken, too. But since it seemed to be working for you, I tried NAT, and that appears to have cleared up the networking problems. The other things I read suggested bridged networking. That might make it easier for connecting to it from the internet (yet another level of port redirection to take care of, in addition to my dsl modem and router), but since I'm only using it for the LAN anyway, it doesn't matter to me at this point.

Most likely you didn't configure the linux firewall correctly, I have configured bridged network access and it works well.
