Virtualized Network

Hi,

First up, apologies if this is the wrong forum, or even the wrong site! I'm a little stumped as to the correct place for this one

I am looking to set up a virtual training environment which incorporates both simulated network hardware and simulated hosts. I have seen emulators for Cisco kit, but that's all they simulate.

What I want to do is to set up a virtual environment, using KVM, where the students can remote-desktop into virtual client machines (Windows and Linux OS's) but also configure the network connections like they were real switches / routers. This is because I am looking to develop a course where we look at QoS and VLANs. The course will probably be delivered online, hence the need for a virtual environment.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Ideally, something like Cisco IOS that will run in a virtual machine on i386 hardware....

You might want to check out vyatta, its router software running on linux but it has a command line program that pretty much emulates the cisco interface
