Vector Linux - 2 NICs

i have a win98/VL/RH7.3 setup on an old compaq deskpro 4000. the integrated NIC doesn't work, so i got it an SMC 1211TX which works just fine in RH7.3 and windoze. I'm not sure as to how to get it up and running in vector linux.

that and, because i have 2 nics, when it boots into RH, its trying to load eth0, which hangs for about 5 mins, then fails. i want to tell it to load eth1, how would i go about doing that?

Thanks for your help.
