Question usre/pwd problem while accessing RH8 samba from win 2k

I am trying to access RH8 from win 2k box which runs fine.
my smb.conf is

[global]
netbios name = Ravi_SAMBA
workgroup = Linux
log level = 2
log file = /usr/local/samba/var/samba.log
security = share
[programs]
path = /home/public
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no
[next]
path = /home/test_dir
browseable = yes
valid user = root
read only = no

------------ smb.conf ends here ------------

[programs] is accessible and I am trying to make user validation for [next].

Now the problem is that when I try to access [next] it asks for user/pwd on winnt box but authentication fails even at root pwd.

is there any other way to make the authentication enabled

Try security = user in your smb.conf. Also did you add the user name to smbpasswd?

Try this for your smb.conf.

[global]
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
workgroup = Linux
server string = Samba Server %v
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
netbios name = Ravi_SAMBA
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
os level = 45
wins support = true
printcap name = lpstat
max log size = 50

Just a suggestion. Do you have remote root logins disabled? if your samba user is being mapped to root(probably very bad idea), the remote root rule will now be in effect. try making a new smb user, smb_user and place it both in smb passwd file and passwd file.

"[next]"
"path = /home/test_dir"
"browseable = yes"
"valid user = root" <-smb_user
"read only = no "
