Question Using vnc client & server from private LAN across internet

Hi!

Like lots of people I am connected to the internet via broadband. My broadband supplier gives me an IP address which in my case is an IP for private network i.e. 10.x.x.x. I want to use the vnc client to connect to a vnc server on another PC across the internet which is also configured the same way i.e. it is also on a private network with an IP 10.x.x.x.

I can think of another complication - what if both PCs are connected in a home LAN environment and the routers assign another private IP such as 192.168.x.x?

Can this be done? If so how?

This might seem a stupid question, but I'd appreciate some help/information on this.

Thanks.

Stephen Ng

You would have to forward the applicable ports on the server's border firewall (that is, the firewall between the public IP and the private IP of the server you want to connect to).

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

I don't think there is any chance of my being able to get that done. I have no access to the gateway machine. It belongs to the Broadband provider and they are not about to make an exception just for me.

Afaik, vnc client & server would not work in the scenario you have suggested us to ask for. Maybe some other alternate could possibly give you a way out/ i am not sure though.

I was afraid of that. A very large proportion of users will be connected in a similar way. Does anyone know of an alternative?

The reason I am asking is so that I can assist someone on the other side of this planet by being able to login to that system.

the computer on the server side has to determine which ports are open and listen on an available port - surely, for the price you are paying for broadband, the isp must make some ports available for you to use.

the default listening port for vnc is 5900; if the isp doesn't make this available, then the server must be configured to listen on a port that is.

a work-around to this, if the isp isn't cooperative, is to establish a peer to peer vpn tunnel, then use the tunnel to connect vnc.

or, accomplish the same using ssh.

hope this gets you pointed in the right direction....
