Using PC as an Ethernet hub (and router)
I work for a non-profit art museum with a very limited budget. We recently got DSL for our office and I've found Smoothwall to be a great routing solution. Unfortunately, I don't have an ethernet hub, and I doubt we'll have the budget for one soon.
However, I have a ton of spare PCs and a stack of ethernet cards. Is there a way to load up my Smoothwall box with four or five Ethernet cards and configure it to act as a router and a hub for the network? Otherwise I have to wait a few months for our next funding cycle (where I'll probably buy a dedicated wireless LAN setup) or pay for an ethernet hub out of my own pocket. Thanks for your help -D Campagna |
I'm sure it's possible but it will be a huge hassle to set up. Why don't you try selling some of those spare parts on ebay and use the proceeds to get a nice hub. You can probably pick one up for $40 US.
