Using ethernet to transfer data

Hi all

I expect to transfer data from Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to Debian 7.3 desktop (2 PCs) using ethernet without a router.

I found following link;
How to network two Ubuntu computers using ethernet (without a router)?
http://askubuntu.com/questions/22835...thout-a-router

But that is for 2 Ubuntu computers. Is there a more recent document?

Thanks

Rgds

I have not tried it, but I'd start just by assigning IP addresses to both boxes using ifconfig. If your computers are not from ancient Rome then you do not need crossover, a regular ethernet cable will do.

Give each machine a static IP on the same subnet
Connect them with an ethernet cable (no need for a crossover as Emerson said)
Everything else works just like normal

This is the same process in ANY linux distro, Windows, OSX, etc. The only difference is what buttons you need to click on to set a static IP on your specific OS.

In some cases a nic that can auto detect cable may need to boot with the cable installed. They sometimes have trouble correcting after boot.

The page is old. Errors like firewall may prevent ping and ftp or samba use so you need to look for that.

Not sure if the app giver would work but might.

Applications like ftp, nfs, tftp, ssh and others may need to be set up on both sides.
