users other than root can not access internet ?
I just installed Fedora core 2. It is really odd that only root can access internet. Other users, at the time they log in, there comes up a message "cannot look up internet address for 'my hostname', will prevent GNOME from operating correctly". The web-browser can not open any web page at all.
Anyone has idea how this happens? Thanks. |
What are the permissions of /dev/eth0?
|
how do you connect to the Internet? ADSL / other?
|
I ticked "allow all users to enable and disable the device" (eth0). Is this what coindood means by permission?
I obtain IP address from dhcp. But when I try to close and restart network with 'network stop' and 'network start', it says 'determine IP information from eth0 failed'. Do I need other IP configuration? By the way, the 'can not look up internet address' message disappeared after I added my hostname to the hosts file. But nowl I can not access internet even from root :( I access internet from LAN in our university. Thanks summerfish |
It may be a problem stemming from an error within installation. If you are using DHCP to connect, then it should be as simpole as plugging in the cat5.
Try setting up the options yourself using ifconfig to bring up the eth0 interface and route to get the dhcp server as the gateway. |
