users and ports?

Hi!!!

I have a quick question for you: :-)

I'm in debian sid and I'm trying to use the pyslsk pogram (a python verion of the peer-to-peer program soulseek).

I can't configure it as a root (I don't know why) but I don't care about it if I can use it with my normal user. Anyway when I try to connect it gives a time out response.

I suspect that I don't have user rights...

may I add this user to any special group or what is the problem?

It uses port 2242...

THANKS!!!

It doesn't sound like a rights problem as anyone can use ports above 1024. Do you get any error messages? Are there any logs for this problem? If you don't get anything you can always try using strace to see what the program is trying to do. Supply more info if you can.

cheers

ports opened

I can't find any log and I've been using strace but I don't really understand it...

but I'm behind a LAN, maybe the ports are closed... how could I know it?

thanks!!

So the program is starting locally just failing to get an outside connection?

I'd be tempted to ask whoever runs your firewall wether its restricting the port(s) you need. It's very common to deny everything apart from things like web, mail and ftp.

cheers

nmap

:-)

I know the person that usually manages the firewall and he told me that I have all ports opened. Anyway this is a university residence and the control of this is done by some people (friends, etc...) that also know how to manage it... I think that I REALLY have that port opened, but I would like to be sure of that...

I've been trying to scan ports with nmap using TCP connect from port 1 to 3000 and when the program is opend it says "port 2234 opened" (with other ports) so I think the port is opend and the server is not working. When I use http port for visiting www.slsk.org (the main page) it gives me the same "time out" problem...

now I believe that is a server problem, but... did I do a correct verification with the program nmap?

:-) thank you very much for your time :-)
