users


how can i see a list of users on the machine from a command prompt??

i have been looking all over for this. i have read a ton of commands and none of them do it. please help.

users only shows me the people logged into the machine. i tried that already.

what i need is the command that will give me a list of the users that have been added to the Server?

Users are contained in the /etc/passwd file. Perhaps you could grep or examine that file.

i guess one could just list all the /home directories, assuming that these users get their own directory.

more precise, expanding on fancypiper's suggestion, would be to use awk to print user's within a specific range of uid/gid's - it would make sense that these users are created should have a specific group (or range of groups) as well as most likely a range of user id's available to them.

The list of passwords is held in the passwd file. This is the /etc/passwd in some distros.

the "cat" command lists the contents of a file.

Try:

cat /etc/passwd


The list should scroll down the page.

cat /etc/passwd | more

will stop the list when a page is complete.
