USB or Ethernet broadband connection/how to set up?
System specs (or at least the info that will come in handy in figuring stuff out):
Athlon 1800 XP ASUS A7N266-VM mobo NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter (Ethernet, integrated into mobo) External 3com HomeConnect Cable Modem (ethernet/usb) Netgear Websafe Router (Ethernet, model: RP 114) Primary computer, Dual boot Mandrake 9.0/ WinXP, Ethernet USB connection Secondary computer, Win 98, Ethernet only connection My computer is part of a network, but for all intents and purposes, I will only need it to connect to the internet with Linux (and XP will do any networking, any configuration, for me). Configuration option #1.) My computer connects to the net via USB, directly to my modem. (While my other computer connects to the net via Ethernet, directly to my modem) Configuration option #2.) My computer connects via my ethernet port, to my router, which in turn, connects directly to my modem via Ethernet. (My other computer will connect to the router.) Option #1, I'll need drivers for the modem, which I havent been able to find. I'll also need help on getting it all configured (I'm a newcomer to linux). And, additionally, when I get my new computer, I'll have to switch over to config #2. Option #2, I'll need drivers for my ethernet (its being recognized by linux, but it isnt being utilized, for some reason). I dont believe that I'll need any drivers for my router, or modem through this method, but I will need a detailed explaination of how to set up the configs. I've been to this site, but havent been able to decipher anything from it that I could use. I think I've given enough info, but if you need more, then respond with what info you need. |
