USB Modem Module not loading

Hello
I am desperate to get a modem working under linux. I have this old modem that I would give a try instead of purchasing a new one, which I still may have to do. IT says its a lamaqq, but

root@durance:~/slmodem-2.9.10# lsusb
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 058f:9360 Alcor Micro Corp.
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0483:7554 SGS Thomson Microelectronics 56k SoftModem
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

I did some searching around and found this guide one how someone got it working on Mandrake. http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/arch.../msg02751.html
I got the new drive and installed it but when I try to load the module...

root@durance:~/slmodem-2.9.10# modprobe slusb
FATAL: Error inserting slusb (/lib/modules/2.6.13.2-x6/extra/slusb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

so...
dmesg :
slusb: Unknown symbol class_simple_device_add
slusb: Unknown symbol class_simple_destroy
slusb: Unknown symbol usb_endpoint_halted
slusb: Unknown symbol class_simple_device_remove
slusb: Unknown symbol class_simple_create

I am not sure where to take this now. The drive looked like it installed find. I may be missing something in my kernel, but I don't know what. If anyone has any sugestions, it would be greatly appreciated. I am running slack 10.2. If this is a lost cause, will someone please recomend a modem, either pcmcia or usb that I would have a really good chance at getting to work. I need to get this to work or go back to windows, and we all know about windoze =]

Please help

Hello,
I won't say this that its not possible to configure USB MODEMS on Linux. It is possible, but may be very time taking and frustrating job.
Some people make it work, some can't.
Me too had this, i tried hard for 3-4 days, but finally i replaced my USB modem with ethernet modem.
ethernet modems are damn easy to configure and do not require any drivers to be installed or modules to be added.

regards

Xaque208, newer 2.6 kernels refuse to accept proprietary drivers, so, in order to make the usb modem module work, you need the ungrab-winmodem module. You can find it here, at the bottom of the page. Read the instructions carefully. Note that you must load the ungrab-winmodem module with 'modprobe ungrab-winmodem' before loading the slusb module. So if you already tried to load slusb, unload it with 'modprobe -r slusb', then load the ungrab-winmodem module and then load the slusb module. Hope this works for you.
