usb modem and network card problems

Hi- i'm new to this forum.

I got optus (company in Australia) cable modem today-
but so far i have only been able to get it working with the usb connection under windows XP.

Now i am trying to get it working under redhat 7.3 but am getting some weird errors:

firstly: i cannot get the modem to work through the network card
(supplied by optus) under either windows xp or redhat.
under windows xp the usb connnection was restarting the computer (randomly) until i disabled the onboard LAN connection in the BIOS as well as disabling the PCI network card.

NB: the optus installer could not get it to work either - i discovered changing the BIOS settings after he had left

(disabling the onboard LAN under windows xp was not enough to
solve the problem)

does this point to a problem with the motherboard????

under redhat the behaviour is stranger-
it only works with usb (auto-detected using kudzu) when the
network card has been detected and then removed (also using kudzu) and on the same boot time-
ie if you reboot without the network card configured
it doesn't work.

can anyone help?
will i need to take the system back to the shop to get them to test
the motherboard????

thanks!
