Urgent," up2date" extremely makes mistakes while upgrading!

Urgent," up2date" has died while upgrading , can't be upgraded automatically when and then with" up2date", Make mistakes as follows:

Fetching rpm headers...
Testing package set / solving RPM inter-dependencies...
There was a package dependency problem. The message was:

To solve all dependencies for the RPMs you have selected, The following
packages you have marked to exclude would have to be added to the set:

Package Name Reason For Skipping
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified
XFree86-4.2.1-21 Config modified

Unresolvable chain of dependencies:

XFree86-4.2.0-72 requires XFree86-libs = 4.2.0
XFree86-4.2.0-72 requires XFree86-xfs = 4.2.0
XFree86-4.2.1-20 requires XFree86-base-fonts = 4.2.1-20
XFree86-4.2.1-20 requires XFree86-libs = 4.2.1-20
XFree86-4.2.1-20 requires XFree86-xfs = 4.2.1-20

I just ran up2date my RH8 (2.4.20-18-8) install and saw the same result. Actually, the first attempt hung during install phase and I was obliged to kill it after 30 minutes. Seems it got as far as changing the XFree86 config files but stopped short of doing the actual update. I tried manually updating XFree86 but RPM says it's already installed...

Advice on how to recover would be appreciated.
