Post Unknown host Error when pinging by name

Hi There,
My network consists of 3 Win 98 and 3 Win 2000 machines.A
All my machines are connected in a workgroup.I am unable to browse RedHat 7.1 from other machine , it shows Network Not Found Error.
However , I can ping all other machines by names from Linux machine but i'm unable to ping LinuxMachine by 'name '(it's possible by ip addr)from other machines.
I connect to DNS (located on other subnet) through a gateway located on our network.
Tried editing /etc/lmhosts and changing name resolve order parameter of smb.conf but no use.

Am not able to figure out the problem...Please help.

So you can ping the Linux box by IP but not name yeah? It sounds to me like you need to update your DNS server so it knows about the linux box. Try running
Code:
host linuxBoxName
If this doesn't return the correct IP address (clearly replace 'linuxBoxName' with the hostname of your linux machine)then you definately need to sort out your DNS. I wouldn't worry about the Samba/Windows issues until the DNS is working properly as it's almost definately related.

cheers

Jamie...

Unhappy name_query failed to find name

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply..I tried typing hostname at terminal and it gave me my LinuxBox Name.
I also tried running nmblookup "-B" <Linux machine-name>
and this is what it returned :
name_query failed to find name
<Linux machine-name>
I presume the DNS is not able to resolve the machine name.
How do I register my Samba machine(the lone linux machine in my network) with the DNS , the DNS anyway is not a machine internally belonging to the network.
Do I make samba Server as the WINS Server..actually i have tried this option..also i have set the name resolve order option to Lmhosts host bcast wins

pls see the smb.conf file.

[global]
workgroup = <workgroupname>
netbios name = LINUXMACHINE
encrypt passwords = Yes
local master = Yes
Preferred master = Yes
Domain Master = yes
log file = /var/log/samba/test.log
guest ok = Yes
wins support = yes
; dns proxy = yes
remote announce = 10.168.168.255/<workgroupname>
name resolve order = lmhosts hosts bcast wins

[test]
comment = For testing only, please
path = /mnt/WinDrive/test
writeable = Yes
guest ok = Yes
