unique telnet problem

i have a unique telnet problem. I'm trying to set up a MUD on Mandrake 7.0. It uses port 4000 as it's telnet port. When I try to connect, I get connection refused. I can telnet normally into the box fine, just not to the MUD port. Is there something I have to do to enable telnetting on port 4000?

as far as i know, mandrake uses some basic level of firewalling. maybe you should look at your firewall config, this port might be closed...

I have looked for it, as I have seen from the other telnet posts, but was unable to find the settings. where would I find the firewall settings?

good question...

erm....

look somewhere in the /etc directory. for something like rc.firewall or a directory /firewall or so.

if you dont fond anything in here, look in the directory /etc/init.d for the firewall boot script.

have fun

The MUD engine is a daemon just like sendmail or telnetd. If it bound itself to that port correctly, then regardless of any silly firewalling goop that mandy tried to do, you should be able to telnet to it from the machine itself on 127.0.0.1:4000. If that doesn't work, I'm skeptical that the mud daemon is actually running.

To have it running automagically from boot you'll have to add a line to /etc/services like:

muddaemon 4000/tcp

and then have another in /etc/inetd.conf like:

muddaemon stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/(something) muddaemon

where the something is whatever the executable for the muddaemon is. Then you should be able to telnet into it... I think. I've never done that either, and honestly very few people have. Offhand, what flavor of mud? LP, Diku? Tiny? kicking that habit nearly took me a year...
