hello, all. i tried browsing topics but instead decided to ask a question direcly, hope you don't mind and hope it hasn't been asked too many times
i use win2000 box as a gateway (call it an A machine). it has ICS configured on one card, and another LAN card configured with static ip of 192.168.0.1.
house lan uses 4-port hub.
when i boot problematic machine (call it a B machine) with win2000 i can regularly access network via first machine acting as a gateway. settings are as follows (read from ipconfigure /all on the B machine)
ip address: 192.168.0.10
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: 192.168.0.1
distro i use for the B machine is slackware 10
machine is p2, ~350 mhz, two adaptec 2940uw cards and 3 disks.. two ethernet cards recognized by slack - configured in etc/rc.d/inet1.conf - have
ip's set to 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11,
gateway set to 192.168.0.1.
resolv.conf has entries for tree dns - 192.168.0.1, and two dns servers that i've read out from the A machine's ipconfig information
all the machines use netmask of 255.255.255.0
another thing i've noticed, and i have no idea if it has any effect on the regular network.. .when i try to use lan browser, it says lisa daemon is not started. when i try to start lisa, it says configfile not found...
i cannot ping, i cannot browse other machines, if i try traceroute it gives no results... any ideas? all help will be appreciated, thanks guys!
I read over your post many times, but, gonna have to call me doufus as I don't understand what you are asking...Which machine is having the network problems, Slackware? Any reason why you are not using the Slackware box as your router?
Distribution: Slackware, Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Mac OS X

Rep:
Are you running a firewall on any of the boxes? Please post the output of the following commands from the machine B while booted in slack.
ifconfig -a
route -n
lspci -v
lsmod
iptables -L
This sounds like a firewall or hardware problem at first look. The output from the above commands should "shed some light" on the situation.
What is the reason for the two nics in machine B? I guess a better question would be what is the exact topology of the network, e.g. what connections are made from all boxen, to the hub, to each other, and to the internet?
good luck.
i am basically trying to set up slackware box as a server before i move it to my friends house and use it as a server box for a website. i will need to install mysql and set up box properly before i take it over to his place and reconfigure his router to let slack box work as a webserver. however, i need to enable network before i do anything else... so, that's why i am trying to configure slack box as a server running apache, php and mysql based website server for a local network at this time ...
machine B has two nic's because i used to use it as a router for the rest of the house, now i want to set it up like i said before. i just didn't remove second nic, though it is irelevant for what i am trying to do now. B machine is connected to the hub via linksys nic.
another thing is that win2000 (A machine) does not have a server but ICS enabled and B machine, when booted with win2000, is able to connect to the internet w/o poblems. now, as for the output you asked me about, peacedog:

i was waiting for my friend that was helping me via irc... and while i was waiting i just shut down machine, took the extra nic out, booted up, and voilla - everything is working fine. thanks everybody!
