unable to send mails via KMail: "no worthy mechs"
Hi,
I've recently updated from kde 3.3.2 to kde 3.4 and am now unable to send mails with KMail. When I try to send I get the following error message:
Sending failed:
Authorization failed, An error occured during authentication: SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found authentication not supported
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used: gmx
The smtp server (gmx.net) needs authentication (method PLAIN via TLS). All this was running fine and is now broken. Oh, and this is the case for whatever smtp server I use (as long as it requires authentication). I am using SuSE 9.1 and have the following rpms installed:
qca-1.0-7
qca-sasl-1.0-5
cyrus-sasl-2.1.18-33.5
I'd be glad for any help.
Cheers, Henning

It looks like something is wrong in the mail server. Do you own the mail server?
In KMAIl there must be an option to view supported auth types. Do a telnet to port 25 ..
telnet server 25
and then type help .. do you see starttls there?

fixed it
cheers, but I actually managed to fix it in the meantime, though the fix is still a bit mysterious to me. It turns out I had to install these extra packages
cyrus-sasl-plain-2.1.18-29
cyrus-sasl-crammd5-2.1.18-29
The mysterious bit is that it worked just fine a while back without these. Ah well.

what fixed it for me was putting the sasl2 library directory in the /etc/ld.so.conf file and running ldconfig afterwards...

problem sending Kmail at earthlink
I just got kmail working at earthlink.People here did not solve my problem but gave me enough info to start figuring it out myself.I am posting this info but just got into this group so if others know how to get this to those who need it--- great.
I could receive but not send mail.Earthlink is trying to control spam by denial of access to their server unless you send authentification.Their support people only told me they do not support Linux so they were no help. The needed info is on their site but you must know what you are looking for.
Go settings---configure Kmail---sending tab---fill in enough info like your isp mail server address to get a button on the right side which says modify---under the general tab the second field has a check box for server requires authentification---give it your account and password---hit ok---hit apply---hit ok
You need your server addresses and port numbers but that can be found at your old email account.
