Unable to connect to winme's share folder

Hi all, I am a newbie here;) . Our office uses a shared printer attached to a winme box, and I want to configure samba and cups to use it. I installed samba and cups, but when i sent a test page to the printer, it had no response at all. Finally I found that it was because I could not connect to the winme box with samba!? I tried "smbclient -L" to connect to my linux box and other winxp boxes, and the connection was just fine. But if trying the same command on the name of the winme box, it failed. Is that because of the name of the winme box "9436664", which i cannot change, or are there some other reasons?

On the ME box have you:
1st, enabled "File & Print Sharing"?
2nd, Shared the printer?

Both are necessary.

I am quite sure the sharing settings on the winme box are correct because the other windows boxes here can access the printer smoothly.

Do you have any printers attached to a non-ME box? (Or could you temporarily move the printer?)

It may also be time to inquire about your GNU/Linux set up.

It is a pity that I cannot move the printer. Actually I can connect to other samba shared folders and printers with "smbclient -L", but the same command failed when trying to connect that winme box. I think it would be the problem with the configuration of the winme system. Also, it could be that there might be some winme specific configuration on my computer that I have ignored.

Do I infer correctly that there are printers attached to other Win boxen, & they do work?

If so, then I have to agree, it's something about ME. Unfortunately the only thing I know about ME is to stay as far away from it as possible, which is not much help to you.

Assuming it is an ME problem, any chance you can upgrade to 98 or, better, 2k? Remember, ME is seriously at its end of life -- M$ is cutting off support soon.

BTW, what other Win flavors are you running?

archtoad6,

There are indeed several other windows xp boxes using the printer, and they work just fine. I also have another computer running windows xp, and I can printer that computer as well.

Actually we only have one winme box in here, which is the oldest one just serving as printer server--It is so old that I belive any operation like reinstallation or upgrade will make it salvage. Also, I am the only one using linux in here. So the hope of changing the os is little.

I think it is the time for me to give up after struggling for weeks. I still can send the file to my winxp box, and then print from that one.

Thanks everyone for your advices.

Roy

I think you're wise not to waste any more time on this. Sorry I couldn't help more.
