Unable to connect to the wifi in Linux Mint 15 (XFCE)
So, I'm trying to install Linux Mint 15 (XFCE) for my brother, who has finally had enough of Windoze. Huzzah!
I got it to boot into the live CD just fine, however could not connect to the WIFI. As there was only 1 bar of signal, I naturally assumed that it was the signal strength, so I found myself a USB extension cable, and moved the receiver closer to the wireless router. This increased the signal strength to full bars.
It still, however, would not connect. I know I entered the correct password, but it will spin for a while in the bottom right corner, sometimes display a window prompting for the password, which is already filled in (and correctly, at that), before more spinning, and a message appearing top right saying that I've been disconnected.
I've tried resetting the interface using ifconfig, and tried to connect manually using iwconfig (though couldn't seem to get wpa_supplicant to cooperate, so this quickly fell by the wayside). However, none of these things work. How do I fix this?
For the record, according to lsusb, the connector is: ID 050D:2103 Belkin Components F7D2102 802.11n N300 Micro Wireless Adapter v3000 (Realtek RTL8192CU)

The primary problem with getting wpa_supplicant running was that it already was running, just not on the right interface, and it could not be killed. Ergo, conflicts ensued.

So, I have since installed backports, from http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~...tml/backports/, on the assumption that there was a driver issue. However, this caused wlan0 to disappear entirely. Naturally, I assumed that this was because the module was not loaded. So, I ran modprobe rtlwifi. This resulted in an "exec format error"... I used backports 3.10.4-1, on the 3.8.0 kernel.
