unable to connect to the internet - etho0 seems to have gotten uninstalled somehow.

Hi. I letft my box on while at work with azureus on so other could download the Nerd Tvs and such that i have. When i came home i noticed that gaim had disconnected and i was unable to to reconnect. Also no webpages would load> i tried pinging google and got nothing. I unplugged and replugged my modem to reset it. When i pinned the loop back device it worked so i don't think it is the card. ifconfig up says "device not found" so i looked in dev and eth0 was no where to be found. Im not too familar with the commands related to networking so my question is what else should i do to trouble shoot the problem? Or does anyone know how this happened? thanks for responses in advance.

The loopback device isn't related to eth0 and eth1 devices.

Reboot and run these commands to see if the system detects the nic. If it doesn't detect it, I would try another nic, move this one to another slot or even just plug it back in to reseat it.

Code:
demesg | grep eth

cat /etc/sysconfig/hwconf
Look for the section labeled: class NETWORK
You can configure detected nics as root ( su - ) with the command: system-config-network

There will not be a /dev/eth0. What output do you get when you type the command ' ifconfig ' also ' ifconfig -a '?
Your network nic config file is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and will be called ifcfg-eth0.
Do you have a router between the modem and pc?
When all wired up can you ping your routers internal lan IP?
Can you ping your routers external wan IP?
If no router then check ifconfig data.
Did you have a firewall setup if no router is used?

Call your provider to find out if there is an outage?

i forgot that i do have it hooked up to a router that goes to my ps2 as well. How do i find the internal ip address of the router? Im not at my computer at the moment so i can't post the output of ifconfig. I will when i get home - i am at work.

i called my provider to see if there was an outage but they walked me through reseting the modem (already knew) what i did know and that what fixed my problem was resetting t he router. i did not know you could do that with the routers as well. thanks for your replies.
