Hi Folks,
Here's a mini networking conundrum that I would appreciate your help with. A family member of mine has Mandrake 10.0 installed on his PC. He is on NTL cable internet and there are some strange things happening with his connection. When the PC boots up, Linux detects the connection (he uses a usb-ethernet connection wihch was supplied by NTL). I can open a shell and go ifconfig and there is an eth0 connection and it is definately alive. Also I can go to the "monitor a connection" tab in the control centre and sure enough eth0 is there and is showing activity. However if I go to open a web browser ie. Mozilla Firefox, it looks as if there is no connection to the internet. I can type in a valid web address and it just comes back saying that the address cannot be found. The PC dual boots with windows and the connection works fine in windows. Anyone got any ideas, your help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mick.
usb networking and dsl with Linux are not good combinations because of a lack of drivers. See this thread; http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk/index.ph...topic=3896&hl=
I would follow the recommendations and use ethernet. Cards are really cheap and easy to configure.
TigerOC,
Thanks for the quick reply. The odd thing is that this connection is working (ifconfig shows that a connection is present and the network monitor is showing activity. Its's just that the web browser doesn't see it (I also tried konqueror and that doesn't work either. Anyone else got any ideas!
Cheers,
Mick.
I had the exact same problem when I first had NTL at home. The cable modem is present and is seen, but not used. The fix was to use the ethernet connection - no problems encountered since.
