unable to authenticate ntlm users using squid

i need to configure squid so that i can provide internet access only to authenticated windows NTLM users.

i have tried to achieve that in the following way.

1) configured samba on my redhat linux box, joined linuxbox to my windows "" domain, using "net rpc join".
2) checked the connectivity between linux box and domain controller using the "wbinfo" command, succesfully able to authenicate NTLM users.
3) configured the squid proxy on the same redhat box enabling "auth_param ntlm ......."
4) configured internet explorer on windows client which is on "" domain to use the squid proxy, it is prompting for the username and password.

so can any one suggest me what might have gone wrong in the above procedure, we are in a testing environment where our users want authentication to be done by squid.

thanks in advance
