Unable to activate VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102[RHINE-II] nic card
 

I AM A GREEN HORN.. NEWBIE to LINUX have had some help but help has less time with new job.

Have a Dual boot system on a AVERATEC 5400 series laptop. With FEDORA CORE 3 and XP home. It has a AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+w/ QuantiSpeed Architecture, 512 MB DDR, 40 GB HDD, Wireless connectivity w/ 802.11g technology.

I am unable to connect to the internet when in Fedora Core 3, I have tried activating my nic card with no success. I have a internal nic card to the laptop. It is a VIA Technologies, INC. VT6102[RHINE-II] card. When trying to activate the card receiving this error.
" Determining IP information for ETH0...SIOCSIFFLAGS:Invalid argument SIOCSIFFLAGS: INvalid Argument Failed." All and any help is appreciated. THANKS

i'm the same via card with you.
i have download the 6102v25VIA.zip but it's only support linux kernel version 2.2.x and 2.4.x (2.4.1-2.4.6) now.
but you know the kernel of FC3 is 2.6
where can i get the newest ?

OK.. i have copied file from a CD and copied it to a directory I created and untar the file. Now, it say to compile the driver source files. I have done a google search on how to compile a file. Nothing out there seems to be straight forward. Can anyone explain how to compile the source driver

OK Have found the command to compile the file BUT have received error.
***"The Kernal header files path /usr/src/linux/include doesn't exist.
*** We can't compile this driver successfully without it.
*** Please install Kernal Header files before you compile this driver.

How do I do this? Unsure what this all means.. Thanks in advance.

there seems to have many .c and .h files but the configure file hasn't appeared
how did you used them

Install your kernel-source and kernel-headers. This comes with every linux OS, so it is there. Install them.

./configure
make
make install

Are typical compiling steps for apps or modules.

Would I want to install the 2.4.X Kernel Header and Source or the 2.6.x. If it is the 2.6.x Wouldn't Fedora Core 3 2.6.x already have the headers and source for 2.6

For 2.6

I didn't have any problem with this card in FC3 - it was auto-detected and is working fine.

However, Debian didn't detect it, so I could not get an Internet connection with Debian.

Since Debian also didn't recognise any Graphics cards later than GeForce3 and so I could only get my GeForce4 to work as a VESA card, I eventually gave up on Debian. A nice trip back into the past, but to install 7 CDs and then find it does not recognise my Graphics card, NIC, Modem, Flat-Screen Monitor, soundcard, etc. A waste of time - sorry to the many fans of Debian, but there it goes.

I realise this doesn't really help with the question - except to show that FC3 does work with this NIC, in some cases. :)
