Unable to activate bcm 440x etho

Mine is a dual boot intel platform with Windows XP and Elxlinux(base RH 7.3) with integrated ethernet controller, broadcom 440x which is working excellent in windows.Yesterday I downloaded and installed driver for the chip ,from bcm4400-3.0.7-src.rpm.All went well till installation and during rebooting, kudzu recognised the hardware and asked to set parameters.Set IP address(same as in WindowsXP),subnetmask, gateway.Booted and saw in network configuartion GUI etho listed, but inactive.Tried to activate. It says IP address used by other hosts which is not the case.Tried setting a different IP address for which too same error message appears.Probed MAC address and set to bind with the address.Causes error saying a different MAC address was expected.Observed one letter in the MAC address was different from the MAC address reported by Windows.Manually reset the address. Now it is not showing MAC address fault .but the value seen in Network Configuration GUI and webmin are different.(This still shows the old probed MAC address)

Has anybody anything experienced similar ?Does anybody here know the solution?
