UID Mapping for NFS without NIS

I'm having a difficult time accessing remote nfs files, because the uids from each of my user accounts are mismatched. I've read that there is a tool called ugidd that will do this, but it seems it was not included with Red Hat 9, and there is no RPM for this.

What is the most painless way to do this mapping? I'd like to avoid installing any tools, or configuring an NIS. Is there a way to do this with Red Hat?

So why can you not change the UID of your account on one machine to the same UID on the other machine (and obviously change ownership of all your files on that machine)?

This is because it is a Debian package. If you install alien on your Red Hat system, then you will be able to convert it to an rpm.

How do you saw a piece of wood without a saw (which you have to buy or borrow)?
Does not a craftsman have to provide his own tools?
