Ubuntu server no longer accessing internet

I am running an Ubuntu server, and it has been having a lot of trouble accessing the net lately. Occasionally it will ping Google or Yahoo, but dropping many packets and recieving a few at around 100 ms. It had been working fine up untill recently... I do not believe there is any difference in how it is setup now from how it had been. Please help. Thanks.

What happens when you run traceroute? Are the packets dying someplace in particular?

Also, what type of connection do you have (e.g. DSL, Cable, etc)? If you are dynamically assigned an IP, does forcing an IP renewal help?

I'm a bit of a newbie to linux. I have Cable connection. The IP is assigned by DHCP
