Ubuntu Feisty & Cable Broadband Access

Hi there - my dads Windows box blew up & I had on older box in the loft & installed Ubuntu for him - tried edgy but it would not recognise his network card & therefore downloaded Fesity for him. Installation was a breeze.
The box was @ my house & connected via the ehternet card to my wireless ADSL router - no problem. I set up thunderbird & off he went home (200 miles on the train).

He gets the box home & turns it on - no problems until he tries to access his internet/email. - there is no connection. The only difference between his house & my house (except his is worth more) is that he has cable - Virgn Media & I have ADSL. He has rebooted the modem etc but to no avail. The "2 monitor" icon at the top of the screen says no connection, even though wired is ticked. (the card flashes when the cable is connected)

Any suggestions? (btw you no longer have to register a new mac address when you change network card).

Small words please - I am new to Linux & my dad is difficult to explain to!!!!!

You can try restarting network services sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart or try bringing the interface up and down again, sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0.

Additionally, you can try having him do ping -c 3 66.102.7.147 and ping -c 3 www.google.com. If the first one works (by IP address) then he's connected to the net. If the second one doesn't work, then you need to add a nameserver to /etc/resolv.conf. You can get a nameserver from his ISP...
