Ubuntu 14.04.5 error via-rhine inconsistent rx descriptor

I've been seeing the effect of this error for a few months now in the system becoming virtually unresponsive but just caught the error yesterday,

via-rhine inconsistent rx descriptor

scrolling rapidly up the screen.

No idea of the cause as nothing but Ubuntu issued patches have been applied to the box.
Here is the relevant info that applies I think:

Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.13.0-100-generic i686)

# dmesg | grep -i eth

# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single
# line, and change only the value of the NAME= key.

Any idea if this is somehow related or what to do are appreciated. It only seems to appear under network load - i.e. when we're running backups to the box and pushing the network adapter (3 other servers @ 100MB-1000MB Full duplex on a 1000MB Full Duplex switch). This had been working fine for 12-18 months prior to the past 3-5 weeks. Again no hardware changes and no software except Ubuntu repos and updates. Backup is done by Bacula. I can provide versions on software etc. if needed.

I'd suggest going back a kernel version it sounds like a kernel issue. I've had similar issues with the network stack doing crazy things and it was always related to a kernel update.

ok that would make sense possibly. iI'll have to look and see when the kernel up[dated and when this started.

driver, ethernet, network cards, ubuntu 14.04.1
