Angry Ubuntu 13.10 cannot connect to wired network

Hello - I have been having continual problems with ethernet networking since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10.

My exact same hardware worked perfectly with 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 but my troubles began as I attempted to online upgrade to 13.10 - the online upgrade failed for reasons unknown, and I did a full reformat and reinstall from the 13.10 CD.

However I noted that during installation the Marvell 88E80001 embedded NIC would not acquire a DHCP IPv4 address so the option to "download modules during installation" was grayed out, which also never happened on previous installations.

After fiddling with it a bit, I got my LAN NIC to work just ONCE and then never again.

I have never had these kinds of network problems with earlier versions of Ubuntu.

I tried entering static IP addresses and I could ping out to the Internet but Firefox still would not work.

I tried plugging in an old 3Com 3C905TX PCI LAN card and it worked, but I would really like to get the on-board LAN NIC to work again.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

TIA for all help and suggestions.

Your "/etc/resolv.conf" probably did not exist or did not have valid entries?
If that's the case enter temporarily google's dns servers - the contents of that file will then look as follows:
Code:
nameserver 8.8.8.8
As soon as you do that firefox should be able to resolve your FDQNs.

Concerning your on-board NIC you should probably post an Ubuntu-Forum or post your full details ("lspci -k", any other useful info...).
Additionally you might have to download from some site (really depends on the manufacturer) the firmware of your NIC and place it in "/lib/firmware" (if your distribution uses that directory).

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I eventually was able to run the Software Updater and it works correctly and reliably now after updating.
