Question Two Linux File Servers!!!! Newbie Question

Hi All,

Sorry to ask a newbie question but I suppose weve all gotta start somewhere.

Here goes...

I have recently setup a Suse 8 server box with a standard 20gb hard disk which has the system partitions on and a Second 120GB hard disk which is partitioned with /data which contains my files.

I now want to add another server to my network which has 2 120gb disks in it but I want to have the data on these disks accessible as a folder on my first servers /data volume.

Is this possible and if not what is the usual way to achive this.

Thanks in advance and I'll look forward to your replys

First make however many mount points you need on /data. Then setup NFS to make them be seen as a continuation of your filesystem. Try a man on NFS for details or even better, read this for the details. Good luck.

If you are using amd and nfs, you could go the inefficient yet easy route, just make symbolic links:

Just so you dont get confused lets just say that /dev/hda1 on your second server is mounted as "drivea" and the second (/dev/hdb1) is mounted as "driveb"

Server1:/data>ln -s /net/Server2/drivea drivea

Server1:/data>ln -s /net/Server2/driveb driveb

This will create symbolic links in the data folder of your first drive called drivea and driveb, that you can just change directory into and access everything as you will (as long as permissions are correct)
