Trying to get computer names instead of IP's

howdy y'all. i just reconfigured samba and /etc/lisarc to use nmblookup (by broadcasting) so i could get a windoze-like updating of my network, like, for instance when another computer is booted up belonging to my network. basically it's all working, but instead of host (computer) names, i'm just getting their ip addresses assigned by the router. i'm missing something, but not sure where to look for the solution. before i had just manually added the ip addresses and computer names manually in /etc/hosts. i changed this because like i said, my router reassigns ips if a new computer is booted up belonging to my network, the host names and ip addresses get out of sync. any solutions would be greatly appreciated and apologies in advance if i did not provide enough information.

Some routers have the capability to make an adress fixed. ( Not static just fixed) So the server always gets the same adress. For linux boxes you still must put the name and ip in the hostfile. (not for win)

If this does not aply on your router, make the server static. Mostly you can shorten the adressrange the router/dhcp assignes (poolcount). You can then use the rest of your subnet adresses as static. In that case you must put name and ip from the server in the host file of each box.(lin and win)

I recently did something like this and it works fine. Keep in mind that the server only works on the intranet. If you also want to work outside your network you need DDNS.
