trouble using usb adapter

I am getting this error when attempting to use my usb wi-fi adapter:

Code:
ath9k_htc: firmware htc_9271.fw requested
firmware: direct-loading firmware htc_9271.fw
ath9k_htc: usb layer deinitialized
How can I fix this so my VM guest machine can use this?

I'm afraid your question is too vague to give an answer to. Is the host OS able to connect to the internet and, if so, how does it do so? Which Linux distributions are you using as the guest? For Debian based you will likely need to install the following or something similar:
https://packages.debian.org/squeeze-...rmware-atheros
Though whether you need it and how you install it depend a lot upon your host OS and what you are trying to do.

It is able to connect to the internet via Ethernet. Virtual box sees the usb adapter, and I have it selected, but yet, when I do an ifconfig, I do not see anything for wlan0.

Normally I use a usb wifi on the host and then it becomes a wired connection in a vm. It's the easy way.

I assume you for some reason need this usb device directly connected to a client?

Would be something like this. https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc
