trouble setting up linux machine on a windows network


hi,
i am trying to get a linux machine to run on my home network. What i have is a pc that get the internet in through it's modem then sends out using through the house using cat-5. is there anyway to set up a linux box on this network and if so how would i go about this.

Use the windows machine ethernet ip as the gateway address.

If you need anything more, we need to know what distro you are using.
