In Transmission, my listening port is closed (I presume closed on my router?) but I can still leech and seed fine. What is the upside of having this port open - better upload and download speeds?
If the outgoing traffic is not blocked connections can still be initiated from your side. Having the listening port opened will allow clients from the other side connect quicker, otherwise they have to wait for your client to make a connection for them. I'm not really sure if I'm right though (Correct me if wrong)

There is one more thing I just realized. if you have your listening port closed, your client won't be able to communicate with peers which also have their listening port closed - both ways are blocked.
Keeping your listening port open will generally help those who can't have their listening port open.
i guess there's some sort of router somewhere (the network provider's), but it's not in my home and i don't have access to it and they probably just closed all non-standard ports for incoming connections.
i can still do torrenting though, at (imho) acceptable speeds.
you can fiddle around with different ports (within a certain range, which i forget atm), but in my experience it doesn't help in that particular situation.
