Ha, it is just nmcli c. For the wired connection it gives:
NAME UUID
IT GIVES 5 BLOCKS OF HEX which I hope you do not need and then 882-3-ethernet

Not sure why you see the null UUID error when trying to run the applet when it looks like there is one although you did not post it. Post the output of the following command.

nmcli con status

I have just realised that the eth0 section of ifconfig misses the second line starting Inet add: 192.168.1.254. How can I edit this line?

Once I had realised where the problem lay I had something to work on and I have mended it. Why changing switches wrecked the system I do no know.
