Unhappy total linuxnewb trying to network needs help...

hey all, well let me emphasize that ii am a total newb to linux. I just bought SuSE 9.0 the other day, and i am currently on my second day trying to configure my comp to get on my network at home. i am interested in learning what linux is all about. heres what i have:

suse 9.0
linksys dual-band wirelessA+G pci adapter (wrt55AG)
onboard ethernet
linksys dual-band wirelessA+B router (wrt51ab)
sbc yahoo pppoe connetion

i tried fooling around with yast and could not get the thing to connect to my router with the onboard ethernet, but failed numerous times . then i tried the wireless, and failed some more. i noticed that im not the only one with wireless problems. now when i have my wireless adapter plugged in it causes the computer to freeze, and i have to pull it out so i can get the computer running.

if any one can help me out by starting out from scratch or anything else it would be greatly appreciated. right now i have to use my old 200mhz pentium comp to get online. its sucks! =(

I'm not going to be much help but... Don't use the wireless at first. Use a network cable direct connected to your WAP. Make sure it isn't a crossover cable also. Such as one that you get with a DSL router often times. Sorry I can't be more help.

Agreed ont he wireless - get the wired working first - it will be easier.

is the nic driver installed properly?
type:
dmesg
and post the relevant results.

Is the router setup peoplerly to conenct to your ISP? Who is your ISP and why type of connection do you have with them.

thanks for taking your time to respond guys...

when i boot my computer this is what i get:

setting up networking interfaces
lo done
eth0 (DHCP) ........... no IP address yet... backgrounding. done
exit status of (network) is (0)

in reguards to dmesg, this is what i got. im guessing anything that has eth0 is relevant, unless there is something else i should know about.

from what i have read in the forums, it seems that chipsets play an important role, so if it matters i have a VIA VT3102 [RhineII] Embeded Ethernet Controller on VT8235, and its configured as eth0 with DHCP.

my linksys router works fine. i have had computers and laptops with windowsME/2000/XP connect to it with no problem.

ok, wow finally! i figured out how to get online. im supposeing that my router has a problem with linux, so i disabled the dhcp server and used staic ip addresses. im not going to attempt the wireless its too late. got to get some sleep. thanks all!

nah the router will not have a problem with Linux - that would have nothing to do with it.

if stastic works but not DHCP then it must be a config issue either in the system or in the router.
