hey all, well let me emphasize that ii am a total newb to linux. I just bought SuSE 9.0 the other day, and i am currently on my second day trying to configure my comp to get on my network at home. i am interested in learning what linux is all about. heres what i have:
i tried fooling around with yast and could not get the thing to connect to my router with the onboard ethernet, but failed numerous times . then i tried the wireless, and failed some more. i noticed that im not the only one with wireless problems. now when i have my wireless adapter plugged in it causes the computer to freeze, and i have to pull it out so i can get the computer running.
if any one can help me out by starting out from scratch or anything else it would be greatly appreciated. right now i have to use my old 200mhz pentium comp to get online. its sucks! =(
I'm not going to be much help but... Don't use the wireless at first. Use a network cable direct connected to your WAP. Make sure it isn't a crossover cable also. Such as one that you get with a DSL router often times. Sorry I can't be more help.
setting up networking interfaces
lo done
eth0 (DHCP) ........... no IP address yet... backgrounding. done
exit status of (network) is (0)
in reguards to dmesg, this is what i got. im guessing anything that has eth0 is relevant, unless there is something else i should know about.
from what i have read in the forums, it seems that chipsets play an important role, so if it matters i have a VIA VT3102 [RhineII] Embeded Ethernet Controller on VT8235, and its configured as eth0 with DHCP.
my linksys router works fine. i have had computers and laptops with windowsME/2000/XP connect to it with no problem.
ok, wow finally! i figured out how to get online. im supposeing that my router has a problem with linux, so i disabled the dhcp server and used staic ip addresses. im not going to attempt the wireless its too late. got to get some sleep. thanks all!
