To Anyone Having Nic Problems In Linux
Please don't take this as a cop-out... but I see SOOO many people spending SOOOO many hours trying to get some of these NIC problems ironed out.
This can be a source of tremendous frustration, especially for the new guys. I am gonna go out on a limb here.... If you are SERIOUS about giving Linux a shot... SPEND THE $10 to $20 ON A CARD THAT IS GUARANTEED TO WORK! http://www.elinux.com/NavBar3.jsp?Navid=34687000 Jeez... I mean... there is so much to friggin learn with this operating system without having to fight hardware that isn't supported properly. By a NIC and be become an Apache/Python/Shell-scripting/X-windows/etc. madman! -KevinJ |

Personaly, I use only 3Com or Intel based NICs and never had problems with them. At the other end is RealTek based NICs that are cheaper, but are the most bad NICs (not specialy as support but as quality). |
Howdy,
IMHO for home networking you can't beat 3com509's. Cheap as chips 2nd hand, never break, set I/O & IRQ with a boot floppy & you are off. I have 4 that co-exist hapilly in a 486 - cheapest router I ever bought! Ian |
I've had great luck with Netgear NIC's and they are $5 at Best Buy this week.
I have had good luck with RealTek NIC's, but it would appear I am in the minority on this one. |
Linksys LNE100TX never give me any problems using the tulip module on any Linux/Distro I've installed.
|
Well, the lne100tx gave me a problem with mandrake 9.1!
It plain out will not work, since it mistakes it as another card all together. |
I tend to stick with 3Com cards (I use a 3C905 at home) and they work just great!
Peace... |
I want to know who on this forum uses a nic with mandy 9.1 and which one it is so I can be guarenteed that it will work when I buy it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 3com /Homer voice I concur, 3com cards are the only ones who have never given me any problems (either PCI, ISA or PCMCIA) SMP seems a close second, that's the PCMCIA card I have on my SO's laptop and it was smooth as silk...easy on the pocketbook too. |
Well TazLinux, I have two ($4 pci) RealTek NIC's in my 9.1 systems. Like id09542, I may be in the minority. I got them for an old win system a few years ago and haven't ever had a problem with them in Linux. I have never tried them with any distro but Mandrake though.

Did you have to go to any special extent to getting it to work in your system? Explain the steps if you dont mind.
|
RealTEK onboard and a Linksys USB Network Adapter..no problemo's.
|
Ive have a couple Intel NICs and they all run fine. They were auto detected, no hacks or recompiles needed.
I have also had no problem with intel integrated NICs, which is pretty impressive, because ive had trouble with other integrated parts. |
TazLinux,
No steps needed for me. Both of my RealTeks and my 3Com were recognized on install and configured. I didn't do anything extra with them outside of the standard installation process. PhilD |
