Timeout when using VNC, Linux to Mac

I am using OSXVnc on my Mac (10.4 Tiger), which provides a VNC server. I'd like to be able to connect to it from my Gentoo Linux machine, which is on the same local area network, connected by a wired Ethernet router that has a Dynamic NAPT firewall. The router always assigns these computers the same internal IP addresses when it starts. I have forwarded port 5900 (the VNC port) to the IP of the Mac. However, when trying to connect to the Mac using TightVNC's vncviewer on Linux, it says:

vncviewer: ConnectToTcpAddr: connect: Connection timed out
Unable to connect to VNC server

Can anyone help?

Other info: I have a firewall on Gentoo, which I configured using Guarddog to allow VNC.
The router is a Zoom ADSL X4.

Thanks.

From the Linux, can you see if that port is listening or is open,
`nmap -p 5900 <apple-ip>`
and BTW if its in the local network you don't need to "port forward" or anything like that.

Thank you. Now, I have managed to get it to work with Tiger's built-in RDP server. It only fails with OSXVnc, which I would like to use because it supports Fast User Switching.

The command (with port 5901) returns:
Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -P0
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (0 hosts up) scanned in 4.069 seconds

And the output from nmap -P0 -p 5901 apple-ip is:

PORT STATE SERVICE
5901/tcp filtered vnc-1

With the Apple VNC server, the state is 'open', not 'filtered'.
