Time out with rsync - server, hosting or other problem??

I'm from Europe and my site is hosted at a US server. I also use this site as on online backup facility. Each night my PC is being sync'd with this server. There are no files larger than 50 MB.

9 out of 10 time I receive a time-out error from rsync. Immediately afterwards I cannot ping my US domain for 30 to 60 minutes. However I still can surf the internet or ping other domains during this time. Also my site remains available for other persons (except for me).

As a result, support of my hosting service says it is not there problem (the site remains availabele). Also the firm who gives me access to the internet (sorry I don't know the proper English word :-) says that it is not there problem because I can surf to other sites.

According to the specs, I should have an upload speed of 512 kbps and a monthly volume of 25 GB. My PC is running on opensuse 11.1 and I am behind a firewall/router (Linksys BEFSX41). I don't have a fix IP address.

This drives me crazy. I can't figure out where the problem is.

Tx for your help

Ivan

BTW : I'm using rsync over ssh. My script is based on the following article www.linux.com/feature/113847.

I have pretty much the standard settings on my firewall.
