Thomson Speedtouch Adsl router problem
I have a Thomson Speedtouch adsl router and I cannot surf the web with it.
It connects to the ISP and I have called my ISP and they confirm that my router is connecting and nothing seems wrong on that end. the router detects the DNS servers automatically and displays them on the configuration page. but I´s still unable to surf the web I´ve tried pinging various IP addresses and I get responds so it must be some kind of DNS problem but I have tried setting the DNS addresses manually and also have them set by the DP server on the router but doesn´t make much difference.
I´m thinking am I missing anything stupid or is my router not working properly.
Have you set the DNS address(es) suppiled by the ISP in /etc/reslov.conf? Sounds like the network connecton to the router is fine if you are able to connect to it so it seems that the system just needs to know the connection address to access the internet.

Well thanks TigerOC I have checked the /etc/resolf.conf and the DNS servers are already there so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Another thing I've been wondering about is that in the manual with the router it doesn mention what the subnet mask should be set to I have it set ti 255.255.255.0 i've also tried 255.255.255.255 and it doesn make any difference. That is I can still access The configuration page on the router but still no network can anybody help me there. like what is a typical subnet mask when connecting to a router
The netmask depends on the ip subnet. Give us the ip range you are using. You must also make sure the ethernet card connected to the router uses the same address range.

The router uses the adress 10.0.0.138 and I have set the computer to use 10.0.0.1
and I set the default gateway to 10.0.0.138 (is there something wrong there?) and I have had the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0
When I'm on the configuration page It says that my IP address/mask is 0.0.0.0/x
Does this x number have anything to do whit other adjustments ?
The netmask should be 255.0.0.0 for 10.0.0.0~255. The ip address of the attached ethernet should be 10.0.0.100+ as well if you are using 10.0.0.138 with the same netmask. The gateway of 10.0.0.138 is correct.

OK I'm starting to think that my router is broken because I tried doing as you said set the IP of the computer to 10.0.0.101 and the subnet mask to 255.0.0.0 and kept the default gateway 10.0.0.138 and got the same results as before, I could access the configuration page but no web surfing.
so I tried hooking up an windows computer to the router and installed the Dr Speed touch and started an diagnostics utility and it detected the computer ok the router OK and ISP OK but it found the DNS servers but they didn't solve the name request. So is there a possibility of some protocol adjustments that might be necessary in order to communicate with the DNS servers properly.
It sounds like the modem/router is ok. You need to have a look at the manual and perhaps do some google searches about using it with Linux. I have seen many while searching the web.
