The two won't play nicely.

Hello all. I have somewhat of a problem that I would love to get some assistance with. I have my linux and windows hardrive in my machine, hdc holding my linux root and some storage, and hdd holding some more storage and my windows drive. Something that seems to have occured is that my Windows internet will not work for the life of me. I would not be using it at all, but I need to do some things for my job on it. As I recall the setup that I have worked just fine on my old DSL line, but it just won't get going on my Cable line that I have now. I have switched out hardware, restarting the router, all to no avail. Something that seems odd though. When I boot into Windows and type ipconfig I just get zeros, but if I wait for a moment or two then I get an IP and a default Gateway. No DNS though. Oh and yes I get a subnet mask as well, when the IP shows up. And even though I resolve my default gateway IP I can not ping it. Now my internet connection works absolutely perfect in Linux :D :D , gotta love that. Anyway, anyone got any ideas as to how I could resolve this? The reason I am posting here is that I have had boxes plugged in at my house that are just straight windows and they worked just fine. I don't know if something in Linux is stopping the Windows connection from working or what. That doesn't even seem like it would be possible, but hey, that's why I am asking ;) . Thanks again.

I dont know if this will help in your situation, but try installing SAMBA on your Linux box and enable WINS on your Windows box.

Sometimes DNS can't recognize Linux without SAMBA and WINS making the connection.

If you already have both of these things running, try stopping and starting them again, but have WINS running before you re-start SAMBA.

Hope this helps :)

Strictly out of curiosity, would that matter since when was in running the other is not? When I am in linux the windows hardrive is obviously not up and running with the Windows OS, so will that indeed make a difference?

Sorry, I mis-understood, I thought you were running both at the same time (2 seperate boxes).

Windows is a pain, but it may be the way your modem is configured thru the ISP. When mine comes up all zeros, it's usually a connectivity issue with my ISP.
