The final answer

I've searched the net for several MONTHS, visited 100's of forums and searched all sorts of "complete" guides to linux, but till date, I've not been able to find a CORRECT, WORKING, WELL DOCUMENTED driver for a PCTel HSP56 Micromodem (or any other Winmodem) until now.

Can somebody PLEASE, FOR GOD's SAKE give me the EXACT steps to install and configure my PCTel HSP56 micromodem in Fedora Core 3???

I don't know much about Linux and need help FAST. So please, please, please, please SOMEBODY tell me how to make this crappy Winmodem work in Linux!!!

http://www.google.com/search?num=100...ux&btnG=Search has many hits for this modem. You could also try www.linmodems.org as they have a lot of info on configuring winmodems under Linux.

As an alternative, you could get hold of an external modem - they always work.

Done all that. I think I'll have to get an external modem, then. If anyone finds more info, can you please leave it here?

Thanx

Well, it may be too late now but you can get a 2.6 kernel-compatible driver here:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...x/welcome.html

look for pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-4.tar.gz

this came out two days ago.

I believe one of the testers is a Red Hat user so it should work fine.

Even if you get it working, I would suggest you get yourself a serial modem, it will save you the hassle next time.
