Ethereal is for monitoring network packets, if thats what you mean.

What are you trying to monitor exactly?

Ethereal for network packet sniffing.

Nmap for scanning.

Snort for intrusion detection.

MRTG for monitoring router utilization and anything else SNMP enabled.

Cheers,

well thnx for the reply
what i m really looking for is a tools which can show me all my network machines status , mean if it's up or down( ping) , and also the status of the daemons running on each machine (port interogations) this is what "what's up" do on windows it monitors the networks activity and services status , on linux there is "MON" it can do the same thing but with less features than what's up i m looking for a good tools under X which can replace 'what'sup' to forget windows for ever .

Nagios is what you want. You can find it at: http://www.nagios.org/

I found it by touring a Data Center once. You know the big screens in the NOC? During the tour I saw Nagios on the screen and had a feeling it was a Free Linux program, sure enough it is. And it works great!
