Unhappy Telstra cable and Mandrake 9.0 kde3

I am an inexperienced Linux operator but from what I have seen of it I really like it. I am have trouble connecting to the internet with my modem. The modem that i am using is exactly that a modem not a router. I live in Australia and have a Bigpond cable account. I have downloaded the BPALOGIN app for linux ( i use this for my xp machine) but still no joy with it. I am very proficent with microsoft products, but this linux problem is driving me crazy. I have set the machine to DHCP so i will pull an Ip from the ISP. I have tried to ftp dce-server but it keeps telling me that it is an unknow host. Please help........I can be contacted at sraphael@bigpond.net.au. Thanks
