Telnetting from outside IP??
Hey everyone, I'm a n00b to linux, so bare with me here ...
I just want to make sure I have this correct. I want to able to telnet into my home linux machine while I am at work.
At home my linux box is connected to the net via a DSL router that has NAT on. Finding out the external IP address of the router is not a problem.
The linux box has a fixed IP on my network.
From what I understand I have to redirect traffic coming into my router on port 23 (or other port I decide) to the (local) IP address of my linux machine on port 23 yes?
Is that all I need to do?
Thanks in advance.

Instead of telnet-ting which sends everything in cleartext, I suggest you use ssh.
Please redirect connect requests to port 22

I will probably move over to ssh when I get telnet working ...
Crawl before I walk me thinks!
Unless someone can implore me that it's easier to set up ssh?

It is indeed as simple as setting up a telnet server; only more secure.
If you are planning to connect from a win-based OS, you can use Putty Client
